Mr. Saenee is a old-school painter. He creates portraits of people with a brush and oil. FOLLOW: www.oxlaey.com www.facebook.com/oxlaey www.twitter.com/oxlaey www.soundcloud.com/oxlaey He is hidden on a side street in Songkhla, Thailand. His style is closer to sketching than painting. He seems to always use nubby brushes. Brushes with the hairs worn down almost to the metal band which claps them to the thin wooden stick. The Painter squeezes out paint. Mini mountains of creamy pigments. Light chocolate. There’s very little pink and red. He’ll use these paints for coloring the skin in his portraits.  “Westerns have pink skins. Asians have brown skin,” says the painter.   He stared at the old black and white portrait - stretching his neck forward a little. Then he looks down to his pil...

In her Bangkok studio, Rattana Salee shares her creative process. By creating monumental structures with 2D layering and repetition, Rattana is able to keep a close relationship with her materials and the subject of her city. Drawing on her experience of watching her city grow and dramatically change of thirty years, Rattana's artwork questions whether this idea of "development" benefits the lives of those living in Bangkok. The ARTISTS ABROAD SPOTLIGHT SERIES takes a look into the studio and thoughts of artists around the world. We seek to equally represent creative innovators from diverse backgrounds using the power of digital media to share their stories across cultures. In a jungle clearing, the pupils produce abstract after abstract with real patience and an often delicate touch. Zoo keepers have long noticed that elephants doodle in the dust with sticks. Giving them a brush instead of a branch is a more recent development. At this sanctuary in northern Thailand, three young elephants in particular stand head and shoulders above the rest. Travelers will see many works of Classical Thai painting inside Buddhist temples and palaces of the royalty. Murals present idealized scenes and stories from the life of the Buddha. Walls also display imagined images of the three worlds --- heaven, earth, and hell. Thai artists presented the subjects in two dimensions without perspective. The size of each element in the picture reflected its degree of importance. Principle elements are isolated. This eliminates perspective. In temples, the artists worked to draw Thais to Buddhism through the beauty and dignity of the paintings. The walls of images also served to educate Thais in the history of Buddhism. Modern artists work within traditions --- and introduce new contemporary elements. Fortunate travelers will have the opportunity to visit sites throughout Thailand to view the ancient, traditional, and modern. Travel to the Arts of Thailand -- The Pottery of Usa Sungkalok Sukhothai The pottery were earthenware made of clay. Common forms of excavated artifacts were cylinders and round vases. The early pots were undecorated while the later ones were carved with geometric patterns and swirling designs. Each of the pieces were also found to have axial perforations which showed that people at that time had knowledge of using tools. The Monk's Bowl Village The alms ceremony in the morning the monks usually carry big bowls for receiving the donations. These bowls are known as 'bat' and have been made by hand for centuries. THAI COTTON WEAVER The process of cotton spinning in northern Southeast Asia begins with the growing of the raw materials: cotton from the cotton fields on the plains of Chiangmai. By the time the actual weaving begins. Once the spinning begins, the main tool is the hand loom, and with the loom the weavers of the North continue a refined and artistic tradition that the Thai are intent on maintaining indefinitely. Travel to the Arts of Thailand -- The Carver of Wood carving is a form of working wood, a cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. Individual sculptures, to hand-worked mouldings composing part of a tracery. The nature of the wood being carved limits the scope of the carver in that wood is not equally strong in all directions. A wood carver begins a new carving by selecting a chunk of wood the approximate size and shape of the figure. The type of wood is important. Hardwoods are more difficult to shape but have greater luster and longevity. Softer woods may be easier to carve, but are less resistant to damage. Any wood can be carved but they all have different qualities and characteristics. Travel to the Arts of Thailand -- The Artisan of Lacquerware and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay The mother-of-pearl inlay technique involves the patient cutting of muk fai, or flame snail, indigenous to the Gulf of Thailand, The outer surface of this shell is removed with a special knife and the pearly inner shell is cut into fairly flat pieces, Sanded flat, they are glued to wooden surfaces to form patterns or scenes and the area in between is filled with lacquer. Several coats of pure black lacquer, from three to six coatings. The final layer is polished with water and powdered fired clay, giving it a glistening shine. Travel to the arts of Thailand -- the artisan of Shrines Spirit houses are miniature dwelling places for invisible helpful spirits. Spirit houses are built for the spirits, guardian angels, individual spirit houses protecting homes, Spirit houses show respect for the spirits of the land. People must care for the spirits of the land, because the spirits are believed to protect people, grant their wishes, and bring them good luck and good health. In exchange, the spirits are given shelter, foods and gifts. Many Thai people believe that each and every place has a local spirit or guardian, and the spirit possesses saksit,or a special power. People build spirit houses according to their budgets. Some are very simple wooden structures

Perhaps it's always goes that way because so many people make their job a priority, when they should be making their work a priority - staying in the office 40 or 50 hours a week when their magnum opus gets a mere half hour. If you have a project which is really important to you, you should find a way to make time for it. If you can't, then perhaps you need to re-organise your life so that project is at the forefront. You could start working part time, start working for yourself so you can set your own schedule, or even expatriate and live in a country where a minimum amount of dollars allows you to live comfortably. Then he looks down to his pile of paint and darts the stubby brush into one pile and then another. Rubbing it around, mixing the colors. Then with a creamy color he likes, he starts to sketch at the canvas with his stubby paint brush.   The Painter spends days, weeks, working on a portrait. A little white mixed in with creamy yellow and brown. He’ll feather the texture of an old man’s hair one day. Smooth the skin of a young woman the next. And lips. Are they curling upwards in a slight smile? Are they flat or even frowning? When he paints, he looks and meditates on people in old photographs. I wonder how this changes how he looks at people who are alive?

Woodcarving exposition of Thai sculpture and artworks in conventional Lanna style created by carver artisans in authentic Burmese teakwood. ศศินันท์ สุนิสา กลีบรัง sasinan sunisa kleebrang SCULPTURE: The first known sculptures are from the Indus Valley civilization (3300--1700 BC), found in sites at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa in modern-day Pakistan. These are among the earliest known instances of sculpture in the world. Later, as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism developed further, India produced bronzes and stone carvings of great intricacy, such as the famous temple carvings which adorn various Hindu, Jain and Buddhist shrines. Some of these, such as the cave temples of Ellora and Ajanta, are examples of Indian rock-cut architecture, perhaps the largest and most ambitious sculptural schemes in the world. WOODCARVING is a form of working wood by means of a cutting tool held in the hand (this may be a power tool), resulting in a wooden figure or figurine (this may be abstract in nature) or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. TEAKWOOD: Genuine Burmese Teak its Latin name is "Tectona Grandis Linn". Teak or Golden Teak is the king of hardwoods and it's one of the world's most valuable timbers, recognized for its durability and stability. Teak is more durable than any other hardwood and has unparalleled rich beauty. Teak can withstand all types of weather. Ancient Burmese and Thai royalty considered teak to be a royal tree. It has been the pillar of the shipbuilding industry for centuries. The decks of the Titanic were covered in Teak, and the wood is as good today as the day she sank on 1912. Teak is also used in the Middle East oil industry as one of the very few timbers that can withstand the punishing heat of the desert and will not readily catch fire. Teak can withstand harsh chemicals, and is resistant to fungi, rot and termites. Unlike other woods, teak does not turn black when in contact with metals. THAILAND: The Kingdom of Thailand is an independent country in Southeast Asia. To its north lies Laos and Burma; to its east, Laos and Cambodia; to its south, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia; and to its west, the Andaman Sea and Burma. Its capital and largest city is Bangkok, called "Krung Thep Mahanakorn" in Thai. At 514,000 km², Thailand is the world's 50th largest country in terms of land area. It is similar in land area to France. The culture of Thailand incorporates a great deal of influence from India, China, Cambodia and the rest of Southeast Asia. Like most Asian cultures, respect towards ancestors and elders is an essential part of Thai spiritual practices. Thais have a strong sense of hospitality and generosity, but also a strong sense of social hierarchy. Seniority is an important concept in Thai culture. Elders have by tradition ruled in family decisions or ceremonies. VIDEO: HiDef video with a stereo sound. The Spotlight Series is a public resource for teaching and learning about 21st century creative processes. English/Nat You've heard of pop art - well now comes trunk art. It's being taught at the world's first art academy for elephants, which has opened in Thailand. The project encourages them to express their inner selves through brush, paint and canvas. Early afternoon at the academy, and class is in full swing. In the five months since they first dipped their brushes, it's said they've developed at an astonishing rate. Alex Melamid and Vitaly Komar first collaborated with elephants in America, three years ago and are the two New York based artists behind this latest project. The Lampang academy is the first attempt to create a centre where the animals and their handlers can be taught basic techniques. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There's dispute over whether it's better or worse than a famous artist like Jackson Pollock or de Kooning but it's not the point. The point is, the average elephant can paint better than the average human." SUPER CAPTION: Alex Melamid, Artist The mahout - or handler - chooses the paint and gives it to the elephant, but the animal decides when it wants a new colour, and when the painting's finished. It's a longstanding partnership, forged over centuries of forestry work, and is vital to the success of the project. Even so the finished canvas is definitely the elephant's work. SOUNDBITE: (English) "You can simply recognise their individuality. I didn't believe before in reincarnation of their souls but now I believe that each elephant has an individual soul and it expresses itself." SUPER CAPTION: Vitaly Komar, artist There is a very serious side to all of this - the plight of the Thai elephant is pitiful. The decline of the logging business has put many out of work. Their numbers have dwindled from 11,000 to 3,000 in recent years and many of those are now virtual beggars on the streets of distant Bangkok. The sanctuary at Lampang gives the luckier ones a decent and secure life. Here they can roam free, as well as earn money for their mahouts though shows for tourists. The aim of the art academy is to provide an extra activity for the more skilled elephants. The pictures are sold to tourists, so it also brings in more money, and according to one critic, who's a supporter of the project, they have genuine merit. SOUNDBITE: (English) "By the standards we use to judge abstract painting in humans, elephant paintings are very good, ranging from a sort of lyrical and expressive, light-hearted approach to a more vigorous, more emotional and angst-ridden style." SUPER CAPTION: Mia Fineman, Art Historian There are big plans for the future of elephant art. Another academy will open in the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya, later this week. Meanwhile, back in the United States, the project's backers are discussing sponsorship deals that could put elephant art on a range of well-known products.
